Cijeli dan voze busevi koji će vas odvesti do skijališta, a u Mallnitzu možete naći jeftin smještaj u hostelu Boarders Palace.

my foreign friends

TUNIS

Sousse, Tunis

Evo me ponovno u sjevernoj Africi, među arapskim svijetom, u muslimanskoj zemlji!

  • Ana Anja = Ja sam Anja
  • En ta Ramzi = Ti si Ramzi
  • Kejfa al hal ? = Kako si?
  • Behi = dobro
  • Rer saheh = nisam dobro
  • Kadeš ? = Koliko košta?
  • Ghrali barša = preskupo
  • Salam Alejkum = pozdrav
  • Alejkum salam = odzdrav
  • Dobro jutro =sabaš al šier
  • Laku noć = Tisba ala šier
  • Ajva = da
  • La = ne
  • šukran = hvala
  • la šukran = ne, hvala
  • Seb mi men fadlak = Ostavi me na miru!
  • Seb mi fehali = Ne diraj me
  • La bes = Šta ima?
  • La bes hamdu Alah = odgovor, "dobro sam hvala bogu"

Douz, pustinja u Tunisu

pustinja Sahara, set Star Warsa

Insha' Allah!

interview with Alexis Farley

I've meet Alexis in Funk hostel in Zagreb, during her European trip. She is funny, friendly and open-minded Canadian girl who loves to travel and has lots of beautiful experiences to share with others...

Anja: What was your first travel experience and can you describe it?

Alexis: My first travel experience was a month long trip to Costa Rica when i was 16. I went to a spanish school there and lived with a family, which was great because I was able to see the beautiful country through a more local perspective. On weekends I was able to travel around the country and got to explore other areas outside of the city including jungles and volcanoes.

Anja:Where have you been so far?

Alexis: I've been to Kenya, Costa Rica, Canada, US, Scotland, N. Ireland, Ireland, England, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, and Iran.

Anja: Why did you decided to travel that much?

Alexis: For me, I always have felt that something is missing at home that I discover when travelling. I don't want to base my opinions on the world merely on what I hear from media and others but I want to experience people and places for myself to make my own judgements.

Anja: Do you study something and if you do how are you handling both?

Alexis: I just finished my BA degree in International Development Studies with a minor in Biology. While going to school I also worked full time to save money for my trip.

Anja: How are you financing your trips and do you think is it expensive to travel?

Alexis: I worked for 2 years prior to leaving, while living at home so I was able to save as much money as possible. Right now is a great time to travel for Canadians moneywise because the euro is the at one of the best exchange rates it has been in years. Travelling can be expensive, but it can also be done on a budget and you can stretch your money much farther than I expected. There are so many great resources for travellers now, especially online including couchsurfing.

Anja: What was the most amazing travel adventure that you had?

Alexis: I have had many great experiences and it is hard to select just one experience. But I would have to say my time in Kenya, living and working at an AIDS orphanage was one of the most rewarding and best experiences of my life. It completely changed my outlook on and the direction of my life. After this trip, I decided to change my degree and life plan to concentrate on development with the hope of returning to Africa to do my small part.

Anja: How did you decide to go travel around Africa, where have you been there and what have you done there?

Alexis: When I was in my 3rd year of university studying Biology, I was having a really diffcult time and kept repressing the feeling that I was not doing what I was meant to be doing and just a general sense of unfullfillment and unhappiness. This all culminated in my rather fast decision to leave for 3 months to go to Africa and volunteer to experience a less comfortable life and hopefully gain some gratitude for all that I had in my life and a sense of contentment.

Anja: How would you describe the feeling to wake up completely alone somewhere in Africa?

Alexis: Scary but exhilirating and slightly addictive.

Anja: How did your parents react when you told them that you are going to Middle East or to Africa?

Alexis: At first my Dad was extremely hesitant and resisted my trip because it was really out of nowhere that this idea came. However, after a day or so he warmed up to the idea and was supportive. He was extremely worried the entire time I was there.

Anja: Did you ever regret traveling and why?

Alexis: There are moments, bad days, where I think to myself "What the hell am i doing?!" and I want nothing more than to go home and have my own bed and the comforts of home. Also, it is difficult to be away from family during the holidays and special occassions and events that I am missing. But then I will have an amazing experience, meet new people, and see incredible things that makes me realize its all worth it.

Anja: You are traveling at the moment, where are you now and what is your plan for this trip?

Alexis: Yes, I am currently travelling. I started in the UK and have been travelling east through Europe. I am currently in Istanbul, Turkey and just got here last night from Iran. My plan is to visit Jordan, possibly India, and then make my way to Africa and travel the continent before finding a job there.

Anja: Are you scared when you travel alone and which are pro's and con's for female solo traveler?

Alexis: I have been extremely lucky so far and have not had any extremely scary experiences. There are times though where a situation could have turned out much worse than it did. It can be very lonely travelling alone but it also forces me out of my comfort zone and to talk to people that I may have otherwise missed the opprotunity of meeting if I was with someone.

Anja: What was the most beautiful place that you have visited?

Alexis: There are many beautiful places, and each place has its own unique thing to offer. I would say my personal favorites so far have been Costa Rica, Kenya, Venice, and Central Europe. But it really depends on what you are talking about...architecture, wilderness, people. ect. ect ect.

Anja: You have seen lot of places and have met different cultures and people. If I ask you is the world a nice place to live in what would you say and why?

Alexis: Good alway prevails evil. There are many unfortunate things happening in the world, including climate crisis, pollution, poverty, discrimination, ect, ect. But amongst this you will always find the people doing there own small parts, making their own local contributions to change these evil forces, and so that makes me believe that the world is a great place to live, you just might have to look for it at times amongst the chaos.

Anja: What is the most memorable experience that you have had from your travels?

Alexis: For me I remember the people I meet more than the places I go. And my impression of the places I go are directly influenced by the people I meet there. So meeting people from all over the world and developing friendships with them is the most memorable for me. Also the continual reminder that we are all more similar than different...everyone dances, sings, eats, cries, laughs, tells jokes, ect. Living in a world that often pits people from different cultures and "others" slightly different from them against one another, it is truly amazing to have that constant reminder.

Anja: What was the hardest thing that you had to do or face during your travel adventures?

Alexis: For me, the hardest part about travelling is saying good bye to people. I have met many amazing people but I always am moving on to the next place. So it is difficult to develop connections with people and share incredible experiences and then say goodbye, not knowing who I am going to meet next and where.

Anja: What have you learned from your travels?

Alexis: The world is a small place, every human being is the same, its governments and politics that turn societies against one another. If you take 2 individuals from completely different parts of the world, they will have much more in common than they would expect. Everyone wants to be accepted, loved, and have a good time.

I have also gained much more confidence in my own ability to manage where ever I am and in any circumstance. I might feel like a certain situation is unconquerable at the moment, but once I am able to get through it and then look back and think "wow...I CAN and did make it". Also, the incredible generousity and kindness of complete strangers and humans for their fellow humans is what makes the world go round.

Anja: Which part of the world you want to visit on your next journey and why?

Alexis: Asia, South America, and New Zealand. Its the places I have not yet been too and I am so eagar to see. For natural beauty as well as different cultures. There is not one place in the world I would not go to given the opprotunity.

BICYCLE ADVENTURE!

This is an interview with Alper Konali, great traveller, great person and great friend. He has been hitchhiking for 8 years all over the Europe and Turkey, but now he found a new way to travel. In a few days he is going on a bicycle from Croatia to Turkey! I met him in the funkiest hostel- Funk hostel in Zagreb!

Anja: Where are you going, how are you traveling and how long will it take?

Alper: I'm gonna go to Turkey. I think I'm gonna go to the coast from here, to the coast of Croatia and then i'll pass Bosnian border and then i'm going to Montenegro which will going to be so hard, it's the hardest part! And then i'm going to Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria and then Turkey. I think it will take 30 days, well I have to rest somewhere for two or three days.

Anja: And you are going with your bike?

Alper: Yeah, I'm going with my bike!

Anja: Why bike, why not hitchhiking ?

Alper: I've been hitchhiking for three months (in one piece) and I've been hitchhiking for eight years now. I prefer hitchhiking while travelling, in Turkey and Europe I did a lot of hitchhiking. I like hitchhiking because you meet so many people on the road. During my last trip I had a lot of beautiful experiences. But now it is cold and I don't want to wait for people to go somewhere, that is why I decided to buy myself a bike and I decided to travel that way. In that way I'll go whenever I want to go, I'll move whenever I want to move, so that is why I'm doing that. And also because I want to have healthy life, I don't want to smoke these cigarettes, cause I'm going to need those lungs eventually!

Anja: Are you ready for it, physically and mentally?

Alper: Actually, I think that you are never ready for travelling. But every time that I've stayed in one place for two or tree days, my body gets used to this comfort and my physically and mentally conditions get used to that comfort, so before I'm going to hit the road i feel like I don't want to go. But as soon as I hit the road, step outside of a room or a place, I know I'm gonna do it! I'm not ready physically or mentally. It will be hard to ride a bike to Turkey, but I have to do it! When I'm on the road I feel I have to do it, my body is like... sometimes when you are scared your body gets adrenalin...and I'll survive any conditions because I get this adrenalin in my body.  "How will I do it, I'm not really strong guy?", sometimes I asked myself. But your body makes yourself prepared for these conditions and then you are going, it is going to be like that. I know it will be so cold, so hard, it is going to rain, it is going to snow and I'll be on the road trying to go home. And when I'm feeling like I'm freaking out, and I'm feeling like "I can't do it, I can't do it!", and then all of the sudden- " I can do it, no problem, I'm going to do that! I really want to do that!"

Anja: What do you think will be the hardest part for you?

Alper: Well, if it rains! I had experience this one time and I regretted travelling because of that. I was near Ljubljana, in Slovenia. I had to hitchhike somewhere during dark time, after 6-7 p.m. It started to rain, I was at the highway and there was no way I can go anywhere by walking! I had to put out my tent, because I knew that nobody would stop to take me at that time at the highway. And I put out my tent. Because of the rain I couldn't do it perfectly. I put everything in, my backpack, my stuff, I was trying to go to sleep so I can get up early in the morning. In my sleep, I woke up because of the sound of the wind, and the rain. My tent was shaking and I had to put my legs and bags and hands all over the tent to keep it together, because it was blowing so hard and raining so hard. And I thought, I wish I was in my bed. That was the first time I regretted my decision. And then I tried to go to sleep, I tried hard, I put earplugs in my ears so that I don't hear the rain. In the morning when I woke up I felt alive! I packed my tent, started to walk somewhere. While I was walking, two police officers stopped me and said " You can't walk on a highway!", I was like " Ok! Take me and drive me to the nearest town.". And then they were like " We can't take you but you can't walk on a highway!". I was like "WTF?!" So I think that if I'll have situation like this it would be the hardest thing, trying to sleep like that... If I try my best I can survive any condition and may regret my decision all the time or I can hate myself to have those kind of decisions, but eventually if I survived it becomes beautiful memory and beautiful experience!

Anja: Have you ever stayed longer than one month in one place?

Alper: Well, I stayed in this farm in France for more than three weeks. Here in Zagreb was the longest stay that I have done! Because I like it here, I love this place and the people! For me, it is the people, I don't love to go to the museums, historical places or other stuff, I don't like city tours. For me it is like, if I'll go to some city or some town I have to see the night life, I have to meet people, talk to them and see their aspects of life, to listen what they think. And that is also why I prefer to work in the hostels!

Anja: Have you ever had a bad experience hitchhiking?

Alper: Oh yeah! One was in Turkey! When I was trying to go back to Ankara from Istanbul, one guy asked me to have sex with him. He didn't really asked me, it was weird! He asked me why I hitchhike and I said that I enjoy it. Then, he asked me what else I enjoy. I said, " Lots of thing I enjoy, man!". He asked me, "Do you enjoy men?". I answered, "No, I prefer woman!". And then, he asked, "Do you enjoy behaving like a women?". "No man, I enjoy to have sex with them!", I said something like that, I went to that level. He asked me "where are you from?" and I said "I'm from Kocaeli " and I asked him back "Where are you from?". He said, "I'm from Erzurum." And than he said that all people from Erzurum are fagots. I said that I don't have an idea, that I have never been to Erzurum and that I don't know anybody from Erzurum. And then he asked me, " Haven't you ever sleept with a transvestite?" I was like, "No! I told you you man I'm doing it with girls!". And he was like "Wow! How can you do it?". And then I said to him to pull over, that I have to get out here so it would be easier for me to get to Ankara.

Anja: What are the best memories that you have from your trip?

Alper: I was trying to go to Berlin from Lausanne, Switzerland. I thought that I can get there by hitchhiking in one day but I couldn't, it took me three days. Second day, I met these amazing cousins and they were going to Würzburg. I have never heard anything about Würzburg. They said they are going to meet their family there and then they are going to some concert. They asked me "Would you like to come, because we have an extra ticket?". And I was like "OK, what kind of concert is that?" It was Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits! And I went to their parents' place and I have met their whole family and relatives because they were celebrating birthday. That was a gift for their father because they went there all together, family and relatives and I was there too with them! So who said that hitchhiking is dangerous?? :o)
